Voice over internet protocol (VoIP) converts voice to a digital signal which travels through the Internet. If calling a regular phone number (PSTN), the signal converts to a regular Analog signal before it reaching the destination. Voice over IP allows making calls directly through a computer, an IP phone, or a traditional phone connected to a VoIP adapter.
A broadband (high speed Internet) connection is necessary. This can be through a DSL connection or cable internet. A PC, VoIP adapter (ATA), or an IP phone. If using a computer, a software called a soft-phone and an inexpensive microphone is required. IP phones are plugged directly into a modem or switch connected to the internet and works exactly as a traditional telephone.

Many more features and services which are not available with traditional phones services, or may be available for additional fees. Features like Voicemail to email, Fax to Email, PBX and much more.
